An abscess is an infection that leads to the buildup of pus in various areas, particularly around the anus. Often, there is an underlying trigger, such as a bacterial infection causing an infected skin cyst. If caught in its early stages, antibiotics might prevent the development of an abscess. However, once formed, the treatment usually involves an incision and drainage procedure. Occasionally, an abscess may rupture on its own, releasing pus. While this might allow the abscess to heal with additional medications, allowing it to burst on its own is risky and not recommended.
An abscess is addressed through an incision and drainage procedure. Following the application of antiseptic fluid to cleanse the skin around the abscess, your doctor will create an incision over the abscess to release the accumulated pus. Typically, a sample of pus is collected to identify the specific type of bacteria responsible for the infection.
The pus is drained out, and the cavity is thoroughly cleaned and rinsed. Typically, the cavity is packed with either gauze soaked in antiseptic solution or a type of gauze resembling seaweed. This packing serves the purpose of preventing the abscess from reoccurring and facilitates the drainage of any remaining infection.
Incision and drainage are the most common ways to treat an abscess (I&D). Smaller abscesses (less than 5 mm) may resolve on their own with warm compresses and antibiotic therapy. Larger abscesses will necessitate I&D due to a rise in pus collection, inflammation, and creation of the abscess cavity, which makes conservative therapies less effective
